Orthokeratology/Corneal Reshaping System

Picture
Orthokeratology/Corneal Reshaping System is a non-surgical and gentle way of shaping your eyes to correct for low to moderate amount of nearsightedness (myopia) and astigmatism. This is done during night time, allowing clear vision during waking hours.  The system uses specially designed vision retainer lenses to gently and gradually reshape the front surface of the eye (the cornea) to eliminate or reduce nearsightedness (myopia) or astigmatism. The principle is similar to the use of a dental retainer used by an orthodontist to realign crooked teeth. The vision retainers are similar to contact lenses and are usually worn while sleeping. They are removed upon awakening to provide clear vision without using glasses or contact lenses! The retainers are comfortable and very easy to care for.

Is This New?

Attempts to reshape the cornea have been tried since contact lenses were first fit. However, the process would take years to complete and would feel uncomfortable. For this reason, many doctors and patients elected not to participate before. Now with the latest corneal surface mapping technology, computerized manufacturing and space age oxygen-breathing materials, Ortho-K is now a viable alternative for many nearsighted or astigmatism patients.

How Is This Done? Is It Safe?

Ortho-K works by flattening the front surface of the eye (the cornea) and also affecting the eyeball length. Ortho-K is very safe and we utilize FDA approved materials. It is safe for children and adults and is an excellent alternative for children who are just first becoming nearsighted.

Who Should Consider This?

Young ages/Significant vision changes: A major reason why vision gets worse in nearsighted people is due to the increase in eyeball length. Ortho-K works by flattening the cornea but also affects the growth in eyeball length. Studies have shown Ortho-K to slow the rate of progression of nearsightedness when compared to children wearing eyeglasses and soft contact lenses. We highly recommend that any children with rapidly progressive nearsightedness wear these lenses in an attempt to reduce myopia progression.

Afraid of LASIK? For patients who are afraid of refractive surgery such as LASIK, this is another alternative to achieve clear vision during the day!  Unlike LASIK, Ortho-K is reversible. Now you can be free of daytime contact lenses or glasses and enjoy great vision during your daily activities without undergoing surgery!

Active individuals can freely participate in sports without the interference of glasses or bothersome contacts.

Prone to allergies and dry eyes? Contact lenses can increase dry eyes and sensitivity to outside dust and pollutants. Ortho-K helps reduce eye irritation and enhance comfort and productivity during the work day, especially computer intensive occupations.
